Day 32 - Fri 9th October - Gairloch & Ullapool

Packed up the MH after a very blowy night at Sands, and turned left out of the gate to drive to Melvaig. Did the walk to the lighthouse at Rubha Reidh, which was all on tarmac (contrast from the previous day!). Quite long and quite up and down. Not feasible with the MH as there are two bridges only 2.2m wide on the road - might just have squeezed the old van through.

The lighthouse is a Stevenson family build from 1912, now in private ownership, and occupied. It's a B&B, rooms £140 a night. We wondered if the guests can go up to sit by the light with a G&T watching the sunset.

Mostly we dodged the showers that were coming through - you could see them all the way from the Outer Hebrides. Beautiful cloud and sunshine effects. The navy appeared to be up to something in the North Minch - we saw a couple ships out there which couldn't be anything but war machines.

Returning to the MH, we drove back to Gairloch, but heavy showers prevented exploration of the delights of the village. We drove north, passing Gruinard again. High tide, but a bit cold to tempt us in for a swim! Walked down the paths to the suspension bridge at Corrieshalloch Gorge, with beautiful autumn colours starting to come through.

Off to Ullapool for the night, and a welcome trip to the chippy, before tucking in for a film.
