Newly renovated station to link Spain and France. The old station built in 1923 has been turned into a very upmarket hotel costing €200 per night. It was deserted .France has delayed their match funding, ( according to the bill boards here ) so the hotel is a bit of an expensive white elephant right now.
The rest of the station will be turned into a park and the sidings into a railway museum
Here's the brand new station which eventually will link Barcelona and Madrid with Paris
So fancy , this hotel!
There was a spring fountain next to this stream where we could fill up our water carriers with spring water
We did a loop walk around the back of the station in the forest and through the mostly closed town .This is a bunker built to repel a possible French invasion after the war ( Franco's fascist government )
We drove through Somport tunnel (thank you Andy) and several aires on the French pyrenees side were already full, so we settled on a campsite called Beau Rivage in Navarrenx , a fortified French town in the Pyrenees-Atlantic commune. The river D'Olroron runs beside the town .There was no riverside access for walkers . This is a Camino de Santiago town, so pilgrims were arriving and leaving , the only sign of life in this small town
I called in to the Church this morning ( which rings its bells at five minutes to the hour curiously) There were people in silent prayer so I didn't stop .
