It was raining in the night and again as we set off for Montignac, 12 degree drop in temperature, but sunny. Half an hour drive northwest, Montignac is an attractive town (honey coloured stone) with large mediaeval quarter. Camped at a quiet town centre Aire (6€) with EHU. Walked 1km to Lascaux IV caves, where an English speaking guide took us on a tour around the replica caves of neolithic art from 20, 000 years ago (21€ each I HR 45 mins). Very informative guide. Only one drawing of a person, (no one knows why) the rest were stunning bison and horses and a woolly rhinoceros, cows, swimming stags, coloured in with red ochre, gorgeous to behold. Original caves are (public unable to see them now in order to preserve them, hence the full sized replica) very nearby and were discovered by a group of teenagers searching for a dog in 1940.
We shared a hot plate of veggie food (cabbage, lentils, spaghetti, slightly odd mix) at a local bar overlooking the Vezere river afterwards and 5 mins back to the Aire through the old town.
