Saturday 2 October Peniche museums and walks

Today we cleaned the van, and did the laundry, walked into the harbour area, visited the Bobbin Lace  museum ,

school and exhibition.Lace was exquisite .Free and very helpful receptionist. The lace industry was an essential household earner in the winter when fisherfolk couldn't go out to sea. We walked on to the fortress and museum for resistance to fascism , the fortress housed  hundreds of political prisoners during the 40 year  fascist regime with the  leader  Salazar. The museum displayed the protests taking place  all over the world and their freeing when democracy came on 25 April 1974 ( Carnation revolution) we spoke to one of the attendants who said that there had never been any reconciliation process between guards and prisoners and schools reported the revolution factually but not the social dynamics of it so children unaware of the implications.Fortress museum was free.

It was very moving

We sheltered from rain in a funky bar and did an 11 k walk around the Peniche headland taking in the Cabo de Carneveiro and the world famous geological  rock formations on the north coast.
