Monday 18 October Tavira to Serpa via Tapada Grande

Sb had a last swim then we packed up and left Campismo Ria Formosa.

We left the main road and drove through the Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana. We stopped for a swim at the Praia Fluvial at Tapade Grande, which was fantastic, we had the place to ourselves. After lunch we walked a

round the ruined mines, where there was fantastic ruined industrial scenery, including a vast flooded open cast mine with red tainted water in it, pH 2-3. Not for swimming! Reminiscent of Parys Mountain in Anglesey, another copper mine. This one was worked by Cornish miners employed by an English company, with local labour. They had their own police force to keep the locals down and occasionally called in the army.

We carried on north, and stopped for the day in Serpa, in the municipal camp ground. Apparently Serpa has a long

communist tradition. We walked into the centre and had some drinks in the main square before returning to the MH for the night.
