We drove along the tourist route of the Ardeche Gorge. It was a much easier road than the Gorges du Tarn - few overhangs, and a wider well surfaced road. The road was along the northern edge of the gorge mostly high above the river, but with a few places where you could get down to the river bank. The main hazards on the road were the motorcyclists enjoying it.
A heron surveying the Pont d'Arc |
Great views from the top of the gorge , no problem driving through -34 km , a few overhanging cliffs (3.70 m was the lowest, and we are 3.1 m)
The dots on the river are kayakers
Saint Martin Sur Ardeche was a campsite at the end of the Gorge in terraces €19 with ACSI
Deep swimming pool and excellent swimming in the warm shallow waters of the Ardeche off rocky ledges and small beaches tucked away for privacy. We walked to Plage Graines a public pebble beach near the bridge and had an ice cream at a campsite on the way back. The path to Saint Martin ran along the shore and completely separate from the busy road
Our pitch nearest the river on the lowest tier was shady and quiet
