Saturday 11 June Avignon Palace de Popes and the Pont d'Avignon

Very hot day

Big plus about the Bagatelle is that it's a 15 minute walk across the river bridge to the walled city of Avignon.

We toured the Popes Palace, (home to 9 consecutive  popes over a 100 year period. Histopads showed us  virtual recreations of each room (which were basically empty)  but dear me, the amount of wealth accrued in their coffers profiting from the traffic up the Rhone....

We walked to the Pont de Benezet (Avignon) and it only stretches half way across the river as the rest was destroyed in the middle ages, with Audioguide. Andy and I danced on the bridge itself and under it too (which is where the locals really used to dance when markets and fayres were  held there) whilst I sang Sur le pont dAvignon to him, Andy is quite patient at times 😊

Palace de Popes, also  a venue for large concerts and theatre performances  (getting ready for the  Theatre festival first two weeks in July)

Where the Pope and his assembled would descend to the masses to give out indulgences out of the window

The courtyard

When we got back to the camp site the sound checks for the  concert continued in the afternoon and then we heard the bands in the evening.  The show cost €35 (Ben L'Oncle - headline - been on Jools Holland) and we decided we could hear them just as well from the river bank
