Drove over a high pass from the Douro Valley, to reach the motorway.
Moved to Penacova campsite by the river Mondego , it advertised a river beach and had a demarcated area for swimming but the river only came up to the thighs so we didn't go in. Pleasant old fashioned campsite, for weekenders, shaded, time to put our feet up. Showers were hot, had mixer taps and were beautifully tiled.
Gondoliers offered river trips and sang not too melodiously but to much applause.
