Late Spring 2025 Trip to Norway - Day One - 14 May 2025

Day One: Watering and feeding  the plants before setting off. Turning towards the idea of embracing van life again.😂

Travelling from  Shrewsbury to Harwich on M54, M6, A14

Andy: Tough drive, 4 hours and my right knee hurt for some reason. Also, the A14 is not a relaxing drive. It has groves worn by the trucks which makes the motorhome 'tramline' - Very unstable steering.

We went for a walk along the promenade in Dovercourt.

Dovercourt lighthouses restored by Harwich historic society in 1984

Sadly, no date or information about their origin.

The beach is blue flagged apparently but doesn't look great at low tide. We passed on the opportunity for a swim.

This is reputed to be a Banksy , but s/he/they never claimed it. Looks authentic enough though,  the council thought so , and covered it with perspex.

In Harwich itself , there's a memorial to the Kindertransport ferries (2022)  to commemorate  rescued unaccompanied Jewish children from Nazi Germany. Harwich was the first UK  port for children  disembarking  who were temporarily  accommodated at a nearby holiday village in Dover Court.

Harwich is also the HQ for Trinity House, which manages lighthouses and navigation marks around the UK. Some former lightships are parked here.

We moved on to the ferry terminal to park up for the night , as the road along the front  (where you can legally park your van overnight)  slopes down towards the pavement. Andy looked with longing at the big motorhomes already  parked up there  with automatic stabilizing/ levelling  up equipment installed . (£6000  a pop 😮 ). We don't think wheel ramps are allowed on public thoroughfares ?

  2. I've ramped loads of times on public roads in Britain and never been challenged by police, but you are right that they may theoretically be ilegal. Where I have been told off by police for ramping is in public car parks as opposed to aires in France.
