Friday 1 October Berlinga Islands and Peniche

 Moved further into town to a MH only park 20 mins from the marina and old town.Great spot, very helpful receptionist 6€ without EHU ( which is only 4 amp ) very peaceful , spacious pitches on concrete (welcome after so much sand). We walked into Peniche harbour and booked a round ticket to the Berlengas islands 7 miles off the coast; I took the advice of the ticket seller who advised the 20 min rib ride rather than the 45 min ferry ride , both bumpy but one over quicker for a few euros more

Andy and

I

ate at a fantastic restaurant Ondo del Mar overlooking the harbour, not cheap but delicious.

Whilst waiting for the boat ride to start we wandered along the board walk next to the  city

fortress to admire the beautiful cottages perched on the cliff tops

The rib ride was exhilarating for Andy and terrifying for me , consisting of deep dives and slapping down hard against the incoming waves . I meditated to try to deal with my abject  fear whilst everyone around me laughed with joy

The island is beautiful, clear green water and fantastic rock formations ;

we took a boat tour into the caves and inlets and walked across the island , there is an impressive fort you can stay in during the summer and a causeway linking it to the island up a long series of steep steps.The instagrammers had finished posing in   the  sea at the small beautiful beach by tea time and the swim was cold and exhiliritating ( World Bluetits day for open water swimmers  )

The ride back as we were going with the waves was much calmer and enjoyable

We walked back , taking photographs of the ceramics dedicated to the Carnation revolution ( over throw of the fascist dictatorship in Portugal until the mid 70's)   and treated ourselves to a pizza  in the van and went to bed early
